A Denimhead’s Guide to the Best Quality Sunglasses
Top Picks for Stylish and Durable Eyewear in 2024
A good pair of sunglasses is virtually indispensable. Not only in the summer—although that’s where you’ll obviously wear them the most.
But while your face (and thus the sunglasses you wear) is likely the first thing others notice about you, sunglasses aren't just about style—they’re essential protection for your vision from harmful UV rays.
And I've found seven options that'll keep you both safe and stylish.
By the way, sunglasses have a similar dual function to a hat:
They protect my eyes from those blazing sunbeams I soak up on the terrace when the kids are asleep, enjoying a glass or two—or three—of my favourite poison.
But they’re also great for ‘protecting’ what’s behind them (my tired eyes) the day after.
BUYING GUIDE
I’ve been wearing a pair of Ray-Ban’s (non-polarized) Round Metal RB3447 sunglasses for almost a decade, and I love them. They’re good value for money, and you simply can’t go wrong with this iconic brand.
There’s also a Polarized version, which you can spot by the ‘P’, although you can only get this lens in the gold-coloured frame—I personally prefer chrome or gunmetal grey. Other ever-popular styles to consider from Ray-Ban include the Wayfarer, the Aviator, and the Clubmaster.
What Does ‘Polarized’ Mean?
Polarized lenses have a special filter that blocks horizontal light waves, which cause glare—typically reflecting off flat surfaces like water, snow, roads, or car bonnets. Polarized lenses allow you to see details more easily and reduce eye strain, making them more comfortable to wear.
Made in Japan, Shinzo Tamura’s Abeno frame features premium polarized TALEX CR39 lenses—handmade in Osaka—for superior clarity and glare reduction. Inspired by the classic Boston frame, the Abeno offers a flattering, timeless look.
With an ultralight and durable nylon frame and top-shelf lenses, you’ll get all-day comfort. Shinzo Tamura sunglasses blend impeccable Japanese craftsmanship with top-notch UV protection.
The Abeno Slate is fitted with ‘natural colour’ lenses, while the Amethyst enhances contrast, making snowy landscapes vibrant. But my favourite is the Slate Mirror, so cool.

The SALT. Optics Yukon combine timeless style with top-tier Japanese craftsmanship. Made from durable Japanese acetate, these sunglasses ensure a perfect fit.
The polarized lenses, made of optical-grade glass and CR-39, come with anti-reflective, hydrophobic, and oleophobic coatings, meaning they minimise glare and repel dirt and water. Features that make them ideal for clear vision and high performance.
Handmade in Sabae, the home of Japanese handmade frames, these sunglasses feature a gold-plated wire frame and acetate pads for a secure, comfortable fit. The polarized glass lenses provide exceptional clarity and protection against glare.
Combining historical accuracy with modern functionality, these shades let you channel your inner WWII pilot with authentic style and meticulous craftsmanship.
The Aviators from The Real McCoy’s are also available at Clutch Café here. Another great pair of Aviators is the ones Randolph Engineering make, which you can get at Stag Provisions.
Definitely the most high-tech option on the list, the Oakley Terrigal sunglasses bring a sleek 90s revival style, and they kind of make me think of Morpheus from The Matrix.
Designed with spring hinges and customisable nose rests, they fit any head size comfortably. The lightweight C-5™ metal frame and Prizm™ polarized lenses provide superior visual clarity and reduced glare, perfect for both style and performance.
Handmade in London, the BOLD Brushfield Tortoiseshell sunglasses exude classic British charm. Crafted from semi-transparent natural cellulose acetate, they feature Carl Zeiss lenses with great UV protection. The detailed hand-finishing process ensures a polished, elegant look. Perfect for adding a touch of sophistication to any outfit.
You can also get them from Clutch Café here.
Made with the highest level of Japanese craftsmanship, the Buddy Optical SUNY Brown Tort/Smoke sunglasses are inspired by the intellectual vibe of the State University of New York.
The non-polarized lenses provide clear vision and come with UV400 protection, blocking 99-100% of harmful UVA and UVB rays.
