Master the Flannel-Jean Combo ... and Some Heavy Denim News!

This week’s biggest moves in raw denim and how to make the most of your flannel

What is up denim people?!?

It’s Friday, the sun is shining here in Denmark, and soon I’ll get out there and enjoy it. But first, I gotta send out this week’s newsletter.

We put a new guide up on the site this week, about how to wear flannels with jeans. It’s part of our ongoing focus on denim style this year, and we’ll be doing more guides like it.

Oh, and what happened to those “deals & drops” I did a few weeks back? Did you see those—and did you like it? I’m curious to know, as I’m still working on bring the concept onto Denimhunters.

The combination of flannel and denim is entirely foolproof.

Start with a great pair of selvedge jeans, and add a great flannel. It’s colourful, eye-catching, and the two pieces look and feel like they were made for each other.

We want to help you get the absolute most out of one of our favourite combinations. We’ve put together a list of nine tips that will help you make sure that you’re leveraging your flannel’s many strengths and avoiding some of its few weaknesses. Follow this advice and you’ll quickly master the combination.

Here’s one of the tips from the guide …

With here spring and summer just around the corner, flannels are in short supply at the moment, but the links we've provided in the article will show you when the flannels are back in stock.

If you don't find what you're looking for now, bookmark this article and return to it at the end of summer when retailers are stocking up for fall/winter.

The SOSO Brothers Make Their Mark

As a made-to-measure jeans maker, SOSO have given their customers a fairly wide range of arcuate choices. For the most part, though, SOSO's back pockets have taken a back seat to their heavy denims (particularly their monsterweight 33 oz. selvedge).

The quickest way to identify a pair of SOSOs in the wild was usually either by their weight or some bold custom design choice made by the customer.

This changed dramatically when they dropped their new signature arcuate last week—the result of years of tinkering with the design.

With a deep nod to the legacy brands and their immediately recognizable arcuates, SOSO has managed to make their mark in a big way.

Bold and graceful, the new arcs have got us looking back through SOSO's impressive lineup of selvedge denims and considering a new pair featuring the new arcuates. Bravo, guys!

Naked & Famous Break the Record

Earlier this week, the guys from Naked & Famous sent us a press release about something that’s just crazy: a pair of 40 oz. selvedge jeans!

So Bryan wrote something about these jeans for this newsletter, making a case for why you need denim that heavy in your life. But I guess enough people thought they did, cuz the jeans sold out in less than a minute! 😮

Naked & Famous has always been a brand to push the limits of the possible or the conceivable with their adventurous denims. With this denim, they’ve once again moved the needle in a big way, establishing a record for heavy selvedge that’s unlikely to be broken any time soon.

Their new 40 oz. selvedge just dropped (and sold out immediately) and the denim world is absolutely buzzing about this stuff!

Produced in extremely limited quantities, the Japanese selvedge was made with a clear goal in mind: to take back the heavyweight crown. Now, Naked & Famous are once again the makers of the world's heaviest denim.

Too heavy to sanforize, the denim is rough to the touch and nearly impossible to sew (the brand purchased a special heavy-duty sewing machine designed for leather workers to assemble the jeans).

Pushing the button through the denim was nearly impossible, so they opted for a screw-on button at the top and a heavy-duty Waldes zipper below that. This should make it relatively easy to get the pair fastened around your waist.

The jeans push the limits of wearable and fadable denim, but we said the same thing about denims north of 30 oz. We've seen that, with patience and dedication, even the wildest heavyweights are fadeable, and we hope that somebody out there has the cajones to wear a pair of these in the next Invitational.
